A 8-year-old dog at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan is looking for a forever home. Burnell is described as 'spry" and 'spunky,' according to SPCA Executive Director Katie Timber. Timber tells News Channel 3 Burnell was brought to the shelter by animal control. Burnell also enjoys playing fetch and will do well in any type of home.

People across West Michigan are taking steps to prepare for a heat wave set to come into the area during the weekend into next week. There will be several cooling centers open across Kalamazoo County for people beat the heat. Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries will be open for up to 50 guests if the temperature rises over 95 degrees, according to Kalamazoo City Emergency Management. The Portage District Library and the Portage Zhang Senior Center will be open during their normal hours.

50 housing pods that were purchased as part of a temporary housing project in Kalamazoo are now up for auction, according to Housing Resources Inc. (HRI). The pods were bought by HRI in 2021 for $1 million to provide temporary housing to people in Kalamazoo, the non-profit said. The money wasn't taxpayer dollars. A listing from Miedema's Orbitbid shows the pods will be available to bid on until June 30.

Some people in West Michigan are getting ready for the potential of severe weather as some communities clean up from storms that swept through last month. In Kalamazoo's Oakwood Neighborhood, there are still tree branches and other debris from May's severe weather, leading to concerns of more damage. "Any one of these trees can fall at any moment and crush a house," Kalamazoo resident, Brandon Hermiz, said.

There's a potential breakthrough in an Allegan cold case involving a 21-year-old man who went missing after leaving a bar in 1990. The family of Richard Hitchcock brought in cadaver dogs and began digging in May of this year, according to Allegan Police Officer Matthew Lyke. A family member told News Channel 3 they've stopped digging, but they plan on resuming that process later this month with more equipment.
