Egg Harbor Township proposes 1-cent increase in tax rate

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — With less federal funding, rising costs and more demands for services, the Township Committee introduced a budget last week that proposed a one-cent increase in the municipal property tax rate. A public hearing for the budget is scheduled for 5 p.m. May 14 at the municipal building, 3515 Bargaintown Road. Last year’s budget was $50.2 million. This year’s proposed budget is $52.8 million, officials said during the April 9 meeting. Last year, the budget rose by $1.4 million.

When the budget was introduced last month, the township proposed a 0.9-cent tax rate increase, which would help pay for new police officers and two additional part-time employees.

Sooy, of Ventnor, died March 17 after a brief battle with stage 4 bone cancer. He was 73.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — In response to complaints about people parking cars, campers, shipping containers and boats on the front lawns of their houses, Mayor Anthony Coppola Jr. said Tuesday he is creating a committee to examine current ordinances and municipal codes and make recommendations to the Township Council. Coppola formed the committee with Deputy Mayor Rich Clute, Councilman RJ Amato III and Councilman Tom Bassford.
