CUMBERLAND — A $30,000 artificial Christmas tree and increases to residents’ water and trash fees were discussed at a mayor and City Council work session Tuesday. Cumberland Administrative Services Director Ken Tressler provided a proposed fiscal 2026 budget update that includes 20% water and 73% trash rate increases. “The water fund is showing a negative cash flow of $192K,” the proposal states.

CUMBERLAND — City officials Tuesday amended a housing development agreement with TeaBow Residential. “TeaBow has requested that changes be made,” according to documents that pertain to the amendments. Under the initial deal made last year the developer would build houses on some vacant city lots that cost $1 each. The agreement included nearly a dozen city-owned properties on Arch, Lee, Elder and Knox streets, and Maryland and Pennsylvania avenues.

CUMBERLAND — Allegany County commissioners halted a proposed property tax increase at an advertised hearing on the issue Thursday. County officials last month agreed planning for the fiscal 2026 budget would include a 2-cent property tax rate increase to generate $1,080,000 and help balance the need for more revenue to cover expenses. In the latest development, Dave Caporale, president of the board of commissioners, proposed the current property tax rate be held at .975.
Memorial Day parade to return to Cumberland

CUMBERLAND — For the first time in more than 50 years, a Memorial Day parade to honor veterans is set to return downtown. County United Way, Let’s Beautify Cumberland!, WCBC Radio and The Cumberland Times-News are co-sponsors of the event, said Chris Myers, coordinator of the parade. On May 26, a Memorial Day service will take place at roughly 10 a.m. on Baltimore Street, between Liberty and Centre streets, followed by the parade.
