The sister of Queensland cricket great Carl Rackemann has been allegedly murdered by her son in a Brisbane home. Suzy Rackemann, 61, allegedly suffered a critical head injury during a fight with her 29-year-old son Conor Robert Rackemann in an Upper Kedron home on August 17. She was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, while the young man was charged with grievous bodily harm. A 62-year-old man has nearly ploughed into oncoming traffic while allegedly drunkenly driving onto the wrong side of Queensland’s Bruce Hwy. The man was allegedly behind the wheel of a ute when he “crossed on to the other side of the road, narrowly missing oncoming traffic” near Mackay about 10pm on Thursday, police said. After 65 years of entertaining punters in northwest Queensland, the Mount Isa Rodeo — the largest such event in the southern hemisphere — may be axed. The rodeo has gone into voluntary administration after lower-than-expected attendance this year, administrators SV Partners said. The accountancy firm has taken hold of the books and director Michael Brennan is looking at ways to save the “iconic and important” event.

A man and a girl have suffered life-threatening head injuries in a head-on car crash with a truck that also left a baby injured on Queensland’s Bruce Hwy. The man in his 30s, the baby boy and girl, whose age was undetermined, were travelling in a Suzuki Swift driven by a 25-year-old woman when it crashed into an oncoming prime mover at Aldershot, north of Maryborough, about 5.40pm on Thursday. The truck exploded in the aftermath of the impact and was destroyed by fire.
