The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, one of the state's largest celebrations of Asian traditions, kicked off over the weekend in a temporary home in San Francisco's Japantown. The hub of the festival, timed to coincide with the blooming of cherry blossoms, was moved to Osaka Way this year while its old quarters at the Japantown Peace Plaza are being renovated. Events are spread across a larger area this year, primarily on Post Street between Laguna and Fillmore streets.

One killed, three injured in East Bay apartment fire

One person was killed and three others injured in a fire early Sunday at a Fremont apartment building, authorities said. The Fremont Fire Department responded to the blaze on the fourth floor of the Waterstone Apartments at 3939 Bidwell Drive at 2:53 a.m. Residents were trapped on the balcony, two of whom tried to leap to escape the blaze, the fire department said.

A sure sign of spring arrived Saturday in San Francisco a few days after the change of seasons: Tulip Day, the annual giveaway of thousands of flowers in Union Square. The temporary tulip garden was crowded with thousands of people, many lining up hours early at Post and Stockton streets to select the perfect bouquet and pose for selfies. More than 80,000 tulips in a variety of colors were given away this year, with a limit of eight per person and a maximum garden time of five minutes.
Loaded gun found in DUI suspect’s car, Bay Area police say

Colma officers, responding to a report of a drunken driver, found a loaded gun in the suspect's car, police said. Officers responded to Serramonte Boulevard and Collins Avenue around 9:20 p.m. last Saturday when a pedestrian reported being almost hit by a Chevrolet sedan, according to the Colma Police Department. Officers located the vehicle and conducted field sobriety tests on the driver after he displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Oakland police seek public’s help finding missing 15-year-old girl

Oakland police are seeking the public's help locating a 15-year-old girl missing for almost a month. Maria Rios, last seen Feb. 27 on the 1600 block of Campbell Street, is Latina and stands 5 feet 5 inches tall. At the time of her disappearance, she had pink hair and weighed 120 pounds. Maria may be in San Francisco, according to the Oakland Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland police at 510-238-3641.
Vallejo police: Youth in stolen car arrested after speeding through city streets

Vallejo police have arrested a youth they say drove a stolen car recklessly through city streets, "nearly causing multiple collisions."Officers took the youth, who had a no-bail warrant for probation violation, into custody Friday after a foot chase when he abandoned the vehicle, according to the Vallejo Police Department. The Honda Sonata's owner reported the overnight theft Tuesday on the 600 block of Alabama Street, and officers were on the lookout for the vehicle, police said.

Market Street was awash in green Saturday for San Francisco's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, a celebration of Irish culture and character that draws thousands of spectators each year. The 174th annual parade, hosted by the United Irish Societies of San Francisco, featured floats, marching bands and dancers, as well as representatives of school groups, youth organizations, labor unions, and San Francisco's police and fire departments. Mayor Daniel Lurie, sporting a green tie, greeted attendees.
Vallejo police arrest pair in heists targeting motorists at red lights, parking lots

Vallejo police said they arrested two suspects in a series of thefts targeting motorists at red lights and parking lots. The masked thieves shattered the front passenger window and stole bags from a woman stopped at a light at Redwood Street and Sonoma Boulevard before fleeing in a white Honda Accord on Wednesday, according to the Vallejo Police Department. Another victim reported a similar burglary Wednesday near Redwood Street and Admiral Callaghan Lane, police said.
