    One person was killed and three others injured in a fire early Sunday at a Fremont apartment building, authorities said. The Fremont Fire Department responded to the blaze on the fourth floor of the Waterstone Apartments at 3939 Bidwell Drive at 2:53 a.m. Residents were trapped on the balcony, two of whom tried to leap to escape the blaze, the fire department said.

    Amid heavy security, about 100 protesters picketed Sunday evening against the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra's performance at Davies Symphony Hall as a guest of the San Francisco Symphony. The protesters, organized by Bay Area activist groups, accuse the Israeli orchestra of using "soft power" tactics under the guise of classical music to obscure its nation's tactics during the war in Gaza.

    A sure sign of spring arrived Saturday in San Francisco a few days after the change of seasons: Tulip Day, the annual giveaway of thousands of flowers in Union Square. The temporary tulip garden was crowded with thousands of people, many lining up hours early at Post and Stockton streets to select the perfect bouquet and pose for selfies. More than 80,000 tulips in a variety of colors were given away this year, with a limit of eight per person and a maximum garden time of five minutes.
