5. DiscussionThe above analysis of interactional metadiscourse use and identity construction in responses to negative online reviews from Beijing and London hotels reveals intriguing strategies and cultural differences in how hotels manage their online reputation and customer relationships. The categories of interactional metadiscourse identified in this study—self-mentions, engagement markers, boosters, hedges and attitude markers—are instrumental in shaping the hotel responders’ identities.
