COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — It’s been 2 weeks since 13-year-old Ryland Calvert was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Florence, and his family is now speaking out. “He was an amazing athlete; he wanted to make it,” said Tiffany Calvert, Ryland’s mother. “He had the biggest heart, when you got to know him he was so loving”. Calvert said her son was taken way too soon. “He would have been 14 on April 21; we were waiting on track to start up,” Calvert said.

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Colbert County Sheriff’s office is implementing a new storm shelter program to ensure the safety of citizens before, during and after a storm. That program will allow people living in Colbert County who have storm shelters to sign up for voluntary safety checks. The Sheriff’s Office tells News 19 that if you sign up, in the event of severe weather, the Sheriff’s Office will reach out to you to make sure you can get to your storm shelter.

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The City of Florence has been recognized and named the number one best small college town in the country by USA Today. Florence is home to the University of North Alabama, and the Shoals’ largest city received the top spot of 10 college towns. University of North Alabama spokesperson Michelle Eubanks told News 19 that each school in the country with less than 50,000 students were nominated.

LITTLEVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A train has been blocking parts of Osborn Hill Road in Littleville since Friday afternoon. Several residents are frustrated about it. “Please, somebody, come move this train. I’m totally frustrated; this has been here since last Friday,” Osborn Hill Road resident Brett Young said. The call for help has been repeated for almost a week now. Bucky Ray lives on Osborn Hill Road and said he has to take a detour to get to his home.
