Officers set up an operation, closing all lanes between Burnett St and Cumberland Hwy on the motorway. “Avoid the area, use an alternative route and allow extra travel time,” Live Traffic Sydney said on X.

Commuters faced delays as emergency services were called to the M5 near Bexley Rd shortly after 7.20am following reports of a car fire in the tunnel. Smoke detectors in the tunnel set off the sprinklers before traffic could be blocked from the tunnel, with vehicles wading throug huge puddles of water.

A major tunnel on the M5 Motorway in Sydney’s southwest has reopened after a car burst into flames on Monday morning. Emergency services were called to the M5 near Bexley Rd shortly after 7.20am following reports of a car fire in the tunnel. Firefighters arrived to find a car fully engulfed in flames, with crews extinguishing the fire shortly after their arrival. The M5 citybound was closed for about an hour and diversions were in place.
