Makenna Cannon came to Emerson College in 2023 excited about their major. The now-sophomore in the health and social change program arrived on campus committed to a new initiative that promised a space where students could create lasting change to improve public health. But now in their fourth semester, the future of the program is suddenly uncertain, they say. Nine of the 10 total students in the program met with Provost Alexandra Socarides on Jan. 30 to discuss the future of the major.

TEL AVIV, Israel—For 67 consecutive Saturdays, Israeli protesters, dissatisfied with the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, marched in the streets demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas and an end to the war. On Sunday, Israel and Hamas implemented the first phase of a tentative cease-fire, which includes the gradual release of 33 hostages kidnapped by Hamas militants during the Oct. 7, 2023 attack. Hamas killed approximately 1,200 Israelis during the raid, according to officials.

TEL AVIV, Israel—Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire and hostage deal Wednesday after 15 months of fighting, negotiators from both sides announced. The three-phase deal, expected to take effect on Sunday, will begin with the release of 33 women, children, and older adult Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian women and children imprisoned in Israel. Soldiers and young males will be released in the second phase.
