    During an amniocentesis test, a long, thin needle is guided by an ultrasound and is inserted through the abdominal wall, passing into the amniotic sac that surrounds the baby. From there, a sample of the amniotic fluid is extracted for analysis. Amniocentesis confirmed the fetus lacked both copies of the SMN1 gene, leading to an SMA diagnosis, and the presence of two copies of the SMN2 gene was a predictive sign of SMA type 1.

    Carnegie Mellon School of Drama’s production of “Ghosts” was showcased from Feb. 26 to March 1 in the Philip Chosky Theater at the Purnell Center for the Arts. Many people poured themselves into this adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “Ghosts,” from the actors, to the dramaturgs, to the scenic designers. To better understand “Ghosts,” I had the opportunity to talk to the director, Carlos E. Martínez, who provided insight into the work and motivation behind the production.

To provide some context, the production follows the lives of six girls — Ashleigh, Tiffany, Margaret, Brandi, Camille, and Robin — and their pathological obsession with horses. Together, they form the Lady Jean Ladies, a sort of equestrian club through which their love of horses is manifested.

According to a New York Times article, cartels in Mexico are luring undergraduate chemistry students in Mexico to work for them. Their goal: to synthesize precursors. According to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network Advisory Board of the United States, precursors are chemicals used to synthesize drugs.

    An is a non-invasive exam that records electrical activity in the brain. Brain cells communicate through electrical impulses. An EEG records the brain’s electrical behavior, which can then be used to detect any abnormalities in the brain that may result from brain tumors, disease, injuries, etc. It is often used to diagnose sleep disorders, epilepsy, and brain injuries. The exam uses small metal discs called electrodes that are attached to the scalp using a wet gel.
