In the very early hours of Thursday morning, a strong, unexpected wall of water came sweeping down the Beitel Creek channel.

As San Antonio mourns the loss of at least twelve residents swept from roads during the record flood event Thursday, prayers can be assigned to names, or at least seven of them so far. The death toll from the floods continues to rise, nearly by the hour, and Bexar County officials are beginning to tell us who they are. Some 15 vehicles were washed off roads in San Antonio Thursday.

As cars zoom down Perrin Beitel over the bridge that straddles Beitel Creek, the view from the sidewalk looking out over what is often a fairly dry creek bed is heart wrenching. Even as the water has receded and the twisted and crushed vehicles were removed, seeing the mile long path vehicles swept by floodwaters took is harrowing. Beitel Creek, while not widely known by its name, begins just south of Loop 1604 and snakes its way down past Loop 410 and cuts under Perrin Beitel.

Six inches: The length of a dollar bill, a standard pen or the average smartphone. It’s a measurement that seems so insignificant, one that couldn’t do much harm. This is nearly the exact measurement of rainfall that fell over San Antonio in a small window of time Thursday morning, causing a wave of water to sweep a creek and sent San Antonio residents to their death. Severe thunderstorms hit San Antonio hard early Thursday morning, June 12.
