The Specialty Coffee Association is continuing to march forward its new professional coffee cupping system — known as the CVA — through a new deal with the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA). Leaders of the two influential nonprofit organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the recent Specialty Coffee Expo in Houston, making the announcement of a “strategic partnership” nearly two weeks later, on May 8.

Among numerous small roasters drawing long lines at last month’s SCA Expo in Houston was the Ikawa Pro50X, a small-scale, feature-rich sample roaster. The latest in the UK company’s Pro X series, the Pro50X follows last year’s launch of the Pro100X, offering smaller capacity and a slightly lower price point with the same advanced set of features, including moisture monitoring and first-crack detection.

Global nonprofit Fairtrade International is now offering “LIRP on Demand,” a tailored service designed to help coffee companies identify living income reference prices (LIRPs) for farmers in their supply chains. The Bonn, Germany-based group, which has member organizations all over the world, described the service as a natural extension of its existing LIRP processes and methodology, which has resulted in seven country-wide LIRPs for coffee.

Coffee grinder maker Baratza just raised the roof on its entry-level Encore line of home coffee grinders, introducing the Encore ESP Pro. Revealed in conjunction with the Seattle-based company’s appearance at the SCA Expo in Houston last month, the Encore ESP Pro builds upon the mechanical platform established by the core Encore and its espresso-oriented sibling, the Encore ESP, with a variety of new features and material upgrades.

As of April 28, 2025, most standard cups of black coffee or espresso shots can be labeled as “healthy” in the United States. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the new designation for coffee — specifically, coffee drinks that contain less than 5 calories per standard serving, or per 12 ounces — back in December.
