    The 2025 Marshall Earth Day panel — hosted in the Dean’s Board Room of Popovich Hall Tuesday — featured a lineup of speakers affiliated with clean energy: President Carol Folt, Santiago Flores, Matthew Langer, Nicole Hagen and was moderated by Geoffrey Garrett, dean of the Marshall School of Business. Folt began with short remarks about the urgency of clean energy for our climate. She added that she feels more optimistic about the environmental movement now than she did five years ago.

    Stop Animal Exploitation NOW!, a national watchdog organization for lab research on animals, sent a letter to the director of the National Institutes of Health on April 8, asking that the NIH revoke USC’s animal welfare assurance. The assurance allows the University to receive federal funding for lab research on animals in exchange for complying with federal policies for humane animal research.

    In an abandoned apartment building, Athena, a young German Shepherd, was found with a broken leg. Even after being rescued, she was set to be euthanized until Divya Cowgill met her. After raising thousands of dollars to get her surgery, her leg couldn’t be fixed, but she found her forever home with Cowgill, founder of the nonprofit FurryTail Endings. Athena became the first dog FurryTail Endings saved. “She was the trailblazer in getting me to realize that she could have died,” Cowgill said.

    The Student Sustainability Committee and Environmental Student Assembly hosted the fourth annual Student Sustainability Town Hall on Wednesday night at the Davidson Continuing Education Center. Students engaged in a Q&A with President Carol Folt and faculty leaders in sustainability to gain insight into the University’s current progress and future goals.
