There is very little serenity whenever very little Sereniti Trice comes to the plate in a softball game. The 5-foot-1, 115-pound speedster from Cathedral Catholic High School wreaks havoc on an opponent’s mindset whenever she places her kid-size-5 cleats in the left-handed batter’s box. “She is the best softball player in the county,” said Torrey Pines’ Jon Moore, who is the third winningest coach in San Diego Section history.

Excitement is in the air as we close in on the June 12 opening day of the 2024 San Diego County Fair. The Fair is the largest annual event in the county, with an attendance of nearly one million. Its origin dates all the way back to 1880, when “a group of San Diegans organized an agricultural fair to bring county farmers together to share ideas, see who had the best citrus fruit, who baked the best pie, and who had the fastest horse.” These days it is still an agricultural fair, but so much more.

Jay Leng texted his Torrey Pines High School boys golf coach with some bad news Monday night, May 20. The senior’s temperature was 101.4 degrees. His likelihood of playing in the CIF SoCal Boys Golf Championship on Wednesday, May 22, was iffy at best. To cover himself, Falcons head coach Chris Drake brought an alternate to the tournament. Turns out, the alternate wasn’t needed.

Egad, one hasn’t seen this occur in the past two years. Midway through the first quarter of the Saturday, May 18, CIF San Diego Section Open Division lacrosse championship, mighty Torrey Pines was being shut out and trailed Coronado by three goals at Scripps Ranch High School. Collectively, the top-seeded Falcons took a deep breath, regrouped and hit the gas pedal.

The most hated CIF San Diego Section boys lacrosse team resides at 3710 Del Mar Heights Road: Torrey Pines High School. Winning — and winning and winning and winning — elicits such vitriol. Well, the Falcons heaped on even more hatred on Friday night, May 17, at Del Norte High School. Torrey Pines hammered rival La Costa Canyon 18-4 to win its sixth straight Open Division championship.
