The Grantham Art Club recently held a competition. Members of the group were “set to the challenge” when they were asked to paint a landscape or seascape that was “different from usual”. Local artist Dennis Hobbs was invited to judge the pictures and comment on them. In first place was Philip Steer, in second was Lynn Carr and in third was Liz Steer. The Grantham Art Club meets on Monday mornings in the community room in Manners Street.

A mother of two is raising funds to combat a condition that is ‘killing’ her. Becky Chappell has been battling dysphagia for the last 10 years, and was hospitalised for four days back in June. Dysphagia causes a person to have difficulty swallowing food and drink, with Becky left “severely underweight” as a result. Becky, from Grantham, said that she has “gone down every road” with the NHS, and is now looking to go private for a solution to her condition.

An annual carol event returns next weekend. ‘Carols at the Bandstand’ returns to Dysart Park next Sunday (December 10). This year, the event will start at St Anne’ Church, Harrowby Road, at 2pm and then move onto Dysart Park at 3pm. A spokesperson for the event said: “Join us this Christmas for a ‘walking nativity’. “Come out and celebrate! Cheer on local schools leading our procession as Joseph and Mary.

This Christmas, the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity will be providing every patient waking up in Lincoln, Grantham and Boston hospitals with a present, writes Ben Petts, United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity manager. We will also make sure all staff working on Christmas Day get a festive feast to enjoy and that our amazing volunteers get to enjoy a festive meal in our hospitals in the run up to Christmas.

In May 1869 there was a report on Grantham County Court before Sergeant Miller, writes Ruth Crook of Grantham Civic Society. ‘James Todd sued a man named Hollingworth, for damages occasioned by reason of the defendant, who was driver of the Angel and Royal Omnibus, having driven against a shutter the property of the plaintiff.
