St Peter’s Hill Players are staging a very serious play with all the pitfalls that could entail – and can come away with their heads held high. The Players are performing Amanda Whittington’s The Thrill of Love, the true story of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed in Britain. Her hanging caused controversy and eventually led to the abolition of the death penalty. Ellis shot and killed her lover David Blakely in a fit of jealousy and immediately admitted to his murder.

It’s that time again! Time to take stock of that precious and vanishing resource - garden birds, write David Martin and Ian Simmons, co-leaders of Grantham Rivercare. Every year, since 1979, the RSPB have run their Big Garden Birdwatch which invites householders to spend an hour recording feathery visitors to their gardens (other viewing places are allowed, including your favourite spot along the river!).

In the early 1900s the landlord of the Artichoke on Swinegate, born in 1855, was mentioned in many of the local newspapers throughout the country, writes Ruth Crook of Grantham Civic Society. He was landlord of several other public houses in the town during his life. He married in the 1870s and had several children, his wife dying in 1896. In 1898, he married the barmaid, who also played the piano in the pub.

John Fowler, born in 1822 at Tattershall, moved to Grantham in about 1840 with his wife Susanna and young daughter Fanny, writes Ruth Crook of Grantham Civic Society. They lived on Globe Yard and he worked as a coachman. By 1858, he was working at the Blue Ram Tap on Westgate, and by the time of the 1861 census, was living at 10 Westgate, and called a higgler (a person who travels around selling small items) and tap keeper.
