Howard County Times

Howard County Times

The Howard County Times was established on March 17, 1840, in Ellicott City, which is the main town situated along the upper reaches of the Patapsco River and later became the county seat of Howard County, Maryland, located just west of Baltimore, the state's primary city and port. Edward Waite and Matthew Fields acquired the Howard Free Press to start this publication. The paper underwent a few name changes, first becoming the Howard District Press when the area was briefly referred to as the Western or Howard District of the older Anne Arundel County. It was then renamed The Howard Gazette just before the onset of the American Civil War. In 1869, the Howard County Times came into existence through the merger of the Howard County Record, which had been initiated by John R. Brown. In 1882, Edwin Warfield, who would later serve as Governor of Maryland and become a banker and the founder of The Daily Record, a newspaper focused on legal, business, and finance news, purchased the paper while he was campaigning for office.
