Markham has long excelled at Merlot, ever since its founding in 1977. Made from predominately 25 year-old vines, this 100% Merlot offers a lithe take on what Merlot can, and should, be. This is a quieter wine, allowing the fruit to slide up on you. There is plenty of blackberry fruit, blueberry, light red currant, huckleberry with medium tannins and acidity for structure.

What separates this from most Chardonnays is not just its subdued Chardonnay qualities, but a driving acidity that provides a comprehensive structure to this wine. Yes, there is lemon chiffon, delicate lime, guava, Asian pear, light resin and a whisper of butterscotch, but there is also a clean, pure quality to this, a minimalist approach to a wine that doesn’t need to over perform. I don’t mean to suggest it’s any kind of lightweight wine, far from it.

Having tasted this wine for many vintages, it is clear the vines and fruit are improving with age. Typical of Willamette Valley and the surrounding regions, there is an earthy quality to the Pinot grown here. This offers light raspberry, cranberry and lingonberry, which works with delicate strawberry, wildflowers and herbal notes. The acidity is spot on, holding the wine in check as a food friendly companion, while the tannins provide structure.

This is a very restrained wine, one where the fruit is evident, but also the earthiness of the volcanic soils and a deep minerality running through the wine make themselves known. It is also a very tactile wine. Using concrete as a tool is known to add a level of viscosity to a wine and that is undeniable here. Comprised of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, there is 34% Merlot added in. The wine was fermented in three different ways - oak barrels, stainless steel tanks and concrete eggs.

Beautifully packaged in a hexagon styled bottle. This is a Rosé from Provence made from Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Vermentino. Deep salmon pink in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with guava, watermelon, minerality and slight strawberries. Medium bodied. Lovely texture. Great balance. On the palate, the Guava and Watermelon come thru with a touch of minerality. Long finish. This is very nice on its own but better with food. It will stand up to a large range of foods.
