    The tragic death of a BC teen has prompted a reminder from police about the dangers of drug use. Campbell River RCMP said that an investigation into a youth’s death led police to believe that it was caused by a deadly combination of Dilaudid (Hydromorphone) and non-prescription cough medication. “It’s extremely important for youth and parents to understand the dangers that are posed by all drugs, including the use of prescription and non-prescription medications,” Cst Maury Tyre explained.

    Spring is officially here, because Grinder and Coola have woken up from their hibernation. The grizzly bears, who call the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife in BC home, hibernated for 149 days this year. They entered their den on November 20th, 2024 last fall. The pair emerged from their cozy winter den over the long weekend, “groggy but healthy”, signalling the seasonal shift.

    Today is Earth Day, and fittingly there will also be a meteor shower visible tonight. The Lyrid meteor shower will be active tonight, with an estimated 10-20 meteors per hour during the peak. According to the Farmers Almanac, the best viewing will be during the early predawn hours, thanks to a nearly full moon tonight that will make visibility a little challenging. NASA says the Lyrids are best viewed from an area well away from city lights or street lights.
