Black balloons mixed with tears and heartbreak – and a little hope too – Monday morning on the Penticton waterfront during the ninth annual commemoration of a 2016 provincial government declaration that BC was home to a public health emergency. On April 14, 2016, then provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall, citing a dramatic increase in drug-related overdoses and deaths over the prior two years, officially declared the emergency.

Is it the most fun you can have in Penticton in the off-season? We met a whole bunch of people in the past couple weeks who certainly think so. It was the fourth edition of the welcome-to-spring celebration of music, art and sometimes straight-up weirdness known as Ignite the Arts. And it was nothing if not adventurous. It was loud too. And occasionally quiet. It was exciting. And then thoughtful. It was young. And a bit more...mature.

So far, 2024 has been the year of the female at Penticton's Many Hats Theatre Co. The action kicked off Feb. 7 with Norm Foster's "The Ladies Foursome," an exceedingly lighthearted story about a group of women meeting for a round of golf just days after one of their foursome died a tragic-yet-somehow-comical death when hit by lightning while perched atop a Ferris wheel.

An exhaustive City staff presentation of some 15-plus minutes wasn’t enough to stem the tide. And ultimately, Penticton City council voted quickly and unanimously during its regular Tuesday meeting to squash a staff recommendation that would have seen the face of one of downtown's perennial sore spots, Nanaimo Square, altered rather dramatically in the name of public safety.
