Monroe County Reporter
The Monroe County Reporter was founded in 1972 by Donald Jackson Daniel Jr., marking it as the first comprehensive newspaper in Monroe County. Shortly after its inception, it merged with The Monroe Advertiser, a well-established weekly publication from Forsyth, where the celebrated author Joel Chandler Harris had worked in the late 1800s. During his time in Forsyth, Harris honed his skills in journalism, advancing from a printer's assistant to a full-fledged reporter. He later became the editor of the Atlanta Constitution, where he created his renowned Uncle Remus tales. Today, the Reporter is recognized as the leading source for news and advertising within Monroe County, reaching over 4,000 households each week. In 2007, the paper came back under local ownership after more than ten years, when it was acquired by a local corporation led by Will Davis, Robert M. Williams Jr., and Cheryl S. Williams.

In the 1950s, a man with the unlikely name of Leonard Franklin Slye was a hero to millions of American children. They knew him as Roy Rogers, “King of the Cowboys.” He was given his new name by a Hollywood studio that believed “Roy” sounded more Western than “Leonard.” At the time, Will Rogers was a very popular western entertainer, so they took the name “Rogers” from him.
