A NAMI-Ipsos poll conducted in January 2024, and focused on full-time workers employed at companies with at least 100 employees, found that most Americans believe it’s appropriate to talk about mental health at work but may not be prepared or feel comfortable to do so. The day I turned in my master’s thesis, I woke up early. I curled my hair and applied a generous coat of makeup — even making time for contouring and setting spray. I have now been in remission from any symptoms of schizophrenia for 11 years. I’ve been married for five years and my son is three years old. Our trio family is happy, content and thriving.

This has often bothered me; sometimes, it feels like the only way I can become who I am “meant to be” is if I look backward and compare who I am now to who I was before my diagnosis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), loneliness is defined as the “feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact.” This is somewhat different than social isolation, which is a lack of social connections — which can lead to loneliness in some people, while others can feel lonely without being socially isolated.”In recent years, this feeling has grown from a stressor to a full-fledged health issue.
