SAT.1

SAT.1

Sat.1 is a German free-to-air TV channel, recognized as the first private television network in Germany. It started in January 1984 under the name PKS (Programmgesellschaft für Kabel- und Satellitenrundfunk) as a collaboration among several publishing companies and was renamed Sat.1 in January 1985. Initially, only about 1,200 households in Ludwigshafen with cable access could watch its first broadcast. The channel's early programming included classic films from KirchMedia, popular American series, and game shows, with the German version of Wheel of Fortune, known as Glücksrad, being particularly noteworthy. Over time, Sat.1 gained popularity for its original series and television movies. Sat.1 is part of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media Group. It has a pay-TV sister channel called Sat.1 Emotions (previously Sat.1 Comedy), which features comedy, romance, and films. In 2013, a second free-to-air channel called Sat.1 Gold was also introduced as an offshoot of Sat.1.
