A couple of months ago we put out the call to find a reader (or apparently two, more on that later) to help coach through a remodel. It was extremely hard to choose the right family/project – I wanted to do all of them. Some were a full house “where do I start – it’s a gut job”, most were solid design challenges where I could feel the overwhelm come through the writing. I’m so sorry we couldn’t interview everyone (and in true Emily fashion I ended up choosing two – just NOT being able to choose).

When I retire I’m going to do this once a week for fun (and a little extra spending dough) – pop into a home, edit, curate, and restyle, then “BYE”! Like a fairy god-Styler (??). Veneer is like the boob job of the furniture industry. It can look amazingly natural and fool fairly discerning eyes, or it can stick out like a rock-hard and overly perky boob sore thumb. Not to even get started on the “this is cheating” discussion on either topic.

When you’re designing a house or heck, even a room, there are so many little decisions that need to be made all at once. And just when you think you might be close to being done a question like “What sheen do you want for your cabinets?” comes up. Or wait, does the trim need to be a different sheen than the walls? It’s a seemingly small thing that can cause A LOT of stress…until now.
