The Alcalde

The Alcalde

Founded in 1913 and pronounced “all-call-day,” The Alcalde serves as the alumni magazine for The University of Texas. It is published six times a year and is sent to the 106,000 members of the Texas Exes. The magazine's goal is to keep alumni engaged with the university by offering accurate, helpful, and captivating content, both in print and online. Our editorial stance is neutral; however, we do promote higher education and cover topics related to the university and the broader field of higher education from the perspective of knowledgeable supporters. The term "alcalde" refers to the mayor or chief magistrate of a town in Spanish, a title used during the time when Texas was under Mexican rule. The magazine is named after Gov. Oran Roberts, one of the first law professors at UT, who signed the university's charter during his tenure as governor. He was affectionately known as “The Old Alcalde.”

Once a month at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, The University of Texas holds a head coaches’ meeting. It’s a chance for the men and women who run UT’s 21 varsity sports teams to check in with each other, as well as with Chris Del Conte and the rest of the athletics staff.   Director of Swimming and Diving and Men’s Head Coach Bob Bowman attended his first one after being hired away from Arizona State, which had just won the 2024 NCAA championship.

Last year, Arianna Tway made history. The UT Radio-Television-Film senior became the first-ever student technical director for a Texas Athletics game at the Moody Center. Tway controlled everything the audience saw on the jumbotron at the venue, home to the Texas Men and Women’s Basketball programs. She pushed buttons connected to live cameras and graphics that would appear on screen upon her touch.

For Americans, a helpful perspective might be that it’s more than three and a half times the length of California.

By Tom Kertscher in Features, Nov | Dec 2024 on | Like many lucky longhorns, Sarah Bird, BS ’07, vividly recalls attending the 2006 Rose Bowl, where quarterback Vince Young, BS ’13, Life Member, led UT to a national championship win over USC. Amid the football fever, however, it also proved an exciting time to be a budding engineer.

By Genevieve Wood in Nov | Dec 2024, TXEX on | Ask country music heavyweight George Birge, BA ’10, about the most cherished moments of his career, and you might be surprised at the answer. Even as the proud Austin native’s star continues to rise—including an opening slot on Luke Bryan’s recent tour and stretches spent on top of the Billboard charts—Birge points to hometown milestones as his most cherished accomplishments.
