It’s a chance for the men and women who run UT’s 21 varsity sports teams to check in with each other, as well as with Chris Del Conte and the rest of the athletics staff. Director of Swimming and Diving and Men’s Head Coach Bob Bowman attended his first one after being hired away from Arizona State, which had just won the 2024 NCAA championship.

In 2021, Bronx resident Shirley Dawkins lost her father to COVID-19 pneumonia. She used food to deal with the depression, which resulted in her gaining 100 pounds. Dawkins, 51, of Co-op City, missed her dad Walter Dawkins a lot and she did not recognize the person she saw in the mirror. Dealing with her weight and diabetes, she needed to make a change. “I took food as my comfort,” she told the Bronx Times.

Born in Guyana, South America, Bronx resident Dion Small wondered as a child whether he wanted to grow up to become a pilot or work with animals. He chose the latter and has spent his life helping furry creatures. Small, 55, of Pelham Bay, started his career at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) as a veterinary technology extern in 2002 – and has been with AMC ever since.

In 2010, Pelham Bay resident Edwin Castro opened Dragons Path Academy at 229 City Island Ave. The academy offers several programs for physical fitness and instruction in the art of self-defense including Hapkido, taekwondo, kickboxing and other martial arts.

Dozens of South Bronx middle school students recently had the opportunity to shoot hoops and chop it up with a New York Knicks legend. On Oct. 30, BronxWorks partnered with the New York Knicks for its second annual Jr. Knicks basketball clinic at the Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center, 1130 Grand Concourse. Knicks Legend Larry Johnson joined the Jr. Knicks team in running drills with middle school students while also passing on important leadership skills to the next generation.
