Residents will be hit in the hip pocket as the Shire of Broome passed an increase in rates for 2025-26, with the minimum residential bill now set at $1401. The rate in the dollar amount for 2025-26 is proposed to increase for all categories except tourism and commercial categories to account for Landgate’s revised valuations, which have seen a 4.4 per cent decrease across all unimproved value properties.

A solar energy project for Broome has been given the green light by the Environmental Protection Authority after finding the project will have little impact on local flora. The proposal comprises 4m-tall solar panels up to 90MW, battery energy storage systems, and a 16km transmission line from a site about 10km north of Broome. EPA chair Darren Walsh said the EPA had published its decision not to assess the Horizon Power project under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is urging landowners to complete fire breaks and reduce fuel hazards on their properties by June 30, as the region braces for bushfire season. All property owners and occupiers are required to maintain fire prevention measures through to December 31, including clearing fire breaks and reducing vegetation that could pose a risk during high temperatures and dry conditions. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $5000, or an on-the-spot penalty of $250.
