    IRWIN -- Derek Smail smacked a three-run, opposite field homer in the top of the fifth inning to propel the Clarion Bobcats to a 3-2 victory over the WPIAL champion Serra Catholic Eagles in a first-round PIAA 1A playoff game contested at Norwin High School in North Huntingdon on Monday (June 2). Smail’s home run served as redemption for the big righty, who just the half inning prior had issued two consecutive four-pitch, bases loaded walks, handing Serra Catholic a 2-0 lead.

    KNOXElementary students got a fun little challenge last month when they were charged with the task of creating animals out of Lego blocks as part of Remake Learning Days in Clarion County. “The kids were challenged with building an animal this year, either a 3D or 2D animal of their choice,” said. “We gave them a base plate and some Legos and see what they create,” said Ryan Smith, the Elementary Technology Integration teacher at Keystone.

    BROOKVILLE -- On Saturday June 14 a Civil War veteran will be remembered for his service but his longevity. William H. Gray of Brookville served in Company I of the 105th Pennsylvania “Wildcat” Regiment. He died on Dec. 31, 1939, the last veteran of  that war in Jefferson County. He was 98 years old. Both Gray’s military service and his long life will be honored by the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War at the 2 p.m. service.
