The Jewish Link of New Jersey

The Jewish Link of New Jersey (JLNJ) started in March 2013 as a community-focused newspaper for Bergen County. By 2015, we broadened our reach to include Union and Essex Counties, and in 2016, we added Passaic and Middlesex Counties to our coverage. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, hyper-local news in full color, featuring engaging articles, Divrei Torah, columns, and opinion pieces penned by writers who have deep ties to our communities. JLNJ serves as a platform and voice for the vibrant and growing religious communities in Bergen, Middlesex, Essex, Union, and Passaic Counties. This includes areas such as Bergenfield, Elizabeth/Hillside, Englewood, Fair Lawn, Linden, Fort Lee, Livingston, New Milford, Paramus, Springfield, Teaneck, Tenafly, and West Orange. In Middlesex County, we report on East Brunswick, Edison, and Highland Park, as well as Passaic and Clifton. Dedicated to showcasing the richness of our diverse Jewish community, JLNJ strives for honesty and transparency in our reporting. We frequently highlight local schools, synagogues, community organizations, and our youth and school sports leagues.

This past rainy Monday evening, I made a relatively rare work trip into Manhattan for a unique business and networking dinner at one of Manhattan’s newer high-end kosher restaurants, Bonito 47. (As I used to work in midtown for well over a decade, it’s amazing to me how infrequently I actually go into midtown today and especially for work. Growing up, midtown Manhattan was the center of the business universe). However, this wasn’t an ordinary dinner.

Should I say that I am thrilled and excited that finally after so many years the long awaited crossing indicator has been installed at the corner of New Bridge and Surrey in Bergenfield? Yes of course, it is a step in the right direction. It allows people to cross at that corner by pushing a button indicating with a light that the traffic should stop for pedestrians. First and foremost, however, is the question of how does this help us on Shabbat? We all know that it does not.

When you start learning Hebrew, one of the first things you discover is that, unlike English, it is a gendered language. This is immediately apparent from the different masculine/feminine verb charts that you memorize. What takes longer to grasp is the world of Hebrew’s nouns, a world where there is no such thing as neutrality.

The contribution of Portuguese Jews to global history is immeasurable, and their story is intricately linked with the Jewish presence in Portugal spanning from the fifth to 15th centuries. In the northern regions of the country, there exist villages, towns and cities that once housed thriving Jewish communities. The origins of the first Jewish settlers in Porto are shrouded in the mists of time, much like the city’s own foundation.

This past Shabbos at Chabad of West Orange, something extraordinary happened. Something that, on the surface, may have looked like a father and son finishing a volume of Gemara—but to me, it was so much more. It was a moment of generational healing, of purpose, and of deep spiritual joy. Watching Aydan finish his very first Masechta—Makos—was surreal. Not just because he’s only 10 years old. Not just because he stuck with it day in and day out. But because he chose it.
