Oakmont Country Club finally had done it: exposed Angel Cabrera as a pretender rather than a contender. Cabrera held the halfway lead during the 2007 U.S. Open but shot 76 in the third round, and, suddenly, his chances of winning a major championship seemed slim. Not that anyone in attendance or watching on TV was surprised. Here was a guy who, at 37, had never even won a PGA Tour event, let alone a major.

DUBLIN, Ohio — After finishing his final round at the Memorial on Sunday, Denny McCarthy set his GPS for Oakmont Country Club. McCarthy planned to spend Monday and Tuesday getting a feel for the legendary course ahead of the U.S. Open on June 12-15. Not that McCarthy, 32, was a stranger. For Alex Lane McCants, earning a college certificate before graduating from high school was a no-brainer. A Highlands senior, McCants is one of 11 regional students to participate in the Dual Enrollment program at Community College of Allegheny County. Other students attend Pine-Richland, Montour, Allderdice and Baldwin, among others. Open to juniors and seniors, the initiative provides students with college-level classes — free or low-cost — before they earn a high school diploma.

It’s time for summer camp once again in Pine. Camp Pine for children in first through sixth grades kicks off June 9 and runs for 10 weeks through Aug. 15. The program is held on the Pine Community Center side of the park. Campers will use the splash pad, turf fields, park trails and gazebo, as well as the gym and multipurpose rooms of the center.
