VOICE OF NIGERIA (VON)
VOICE OF NIGERIA (VON) was established in 1961 as the External Service of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), which later evolved into the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). Recognizing the significance of external broadcasting, the late Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, initiated the launch of a 10KW HF transmitter that aired programs for two hours each day. The primary audience for these broadcasts was West Africa, with content delivered in both English and French. In 1962, just two years after it began, the service gained further importance when the government purchased 40 hectares of land in Ipakodo, Ikorodu, for a state-of-the-art transmitting station dedicated to external broadcasting. In 1963, five prototype RCA 100KW HF transmitters were installed and put into operation.
