Ghana News Agency

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) serves as the official news outlet for Ghana. Established in 1957 by Kwame Nkrumah, it was created to shape a positive image of the nation for international audiences while managing information flow within the country. A 1964 report by The New York Times revealed that most of the news provided by GNA came from Reuters, as the agency had only a limited number of foreign correspondents. It acted as a filter for international news, sharing content with the Ghanaian media while censoring any critical reports about the country's government. For many years, GNA was recognized as one of Africa's most effective news agencies, promoting what Nkrumah referred to as the "clear ideology of the African Revolution" and supporting the cause of African and Ghanaian freedom. Originally a government department, GNA transitioned to a state corporation when Ghana became a republic in 1960. Although the media landscape in Ghana is generally considered to be quite free, the GNA was noted for its strong pro-government stance as recently as 2001. The agency's goal is to foster political, social, and economic growth in Ghana by creating a knowledge-driven society. It achieves this by collecting, processing, and sharing high-quality news and information that resonates with the values of Ghanaians, covering stories from across the country, Africa, and the globe.
