Democrat Maurice “Mo” Green defeated Republican Michele Morrow in the race for North Carolina superintendent of public instruction in the 2024 election and took the place of Republican Catherine Truitt on Jan. 1. The power in North Carolina’s superintendent position lies in the budget, where teacher pay and public school resources are determined. Green’s win marks a change for the state, as a Republican has held the position for the past eight years.

Watauga County saw a new candidate on the ballot in the 2024 election cycle: 26-year-old Nate Coppenbarger, who ran unopposed for Soil and Water Conservation District supervisor. Coppenbarger attended App State as a sustainable development major with a concentration in environmental studies. During his senior year, Coppenbarger went home to Asheville to help his parents take care of his grandparents amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Categories: September 18, 2024 App State celebrated the completion of the Holmes Drive Parking Deck on Aug. 22, a project completed by New Atlantic Contracting, which employed one of App State’s own, Dylan Reed. Reed graduated from App State in May with a degree in construction management after completing an internship with New Atlantic. During his internship, he worked on the Holmes Drive Parking Deck. He now works full time for the company as an on-site project engineer.

He said one of the reasons he came to App State was for the organization. “I came to the open house and noticed during the tour a large group of Hispanic, Latine students,” Ibarra said. “That basically drew my attention to wanting to come here.
