The App State Board of Trustees named Dowell Loggains the new head coach of App State football on Saturday. Loggains is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of South Carolina. The Board met in a closed meeting Saturday evening to discuss the appointment. The University of South Carolina has a 9-3 record with 31.6 points per game this year which puts them at 42 nationally and 6th in the SEC under Loggains, according to the NCAA website.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted unanimously to certify the results of the 2024 election Tuesday. The results were certified for all races except 10 currently undergoing recounts in the state. One of the 10 races in North Carolina undergoing a recount is the race for North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice Seat 6. The race is between Democrat Allison Riggs and Republican Jefferson Griffin.

In August of 2021, a shy freshman with an interest in politics fell out of a coconut tree and into The Appalachian’s newsroom. He wrote with oxford commas, didn’t know how to attribute a quote and found his way into photos of protests that he wasn’t allowed to be in. That freshman is me, now a senior with four election cycles, hundreds of stories, hours of late nights and one college journalism career I am proud to call my own. I didn’t know anyone when I first joined The Appalachian.

The Watauga County Board of Elections voted to certify the results of the 2024 elections Friday. The vote totals approved by the board are official but members of the board signed a document that read “unofficial” because of a computer error which kept votes from being finalized. “Whatever issue the system has only relates to digital records,” said Watauga County Director of Elections Matthew Snyder.

Alison Caroll Idol, Charlotte Mizelle Lloyd and Adam Hege are projected to win seats on the Watauga County Board of Education. Idol, Lloyd and Hege are projected to defeat Marshall Ashcraft, Chad Cole and Tom Ross with 100% of precincts reporting. The Watauga County Board of Elections approved accepted provisional ballots at their Nov. 13 meeting which allowed The Appalachian to project winners to the Board of Education.

The App State College Republicans met Wednesday to discuss the results of the 2024 general election and celebrate several victories for federal, state and local candidates. Roughly 20 people attended the meeting in Anne Belk Hall which began with watching Donald Trump’s Nov. 6 acceptance speech. College Republican president Jacob Epperson gave opening remarks at the beginning of the meeting.

Republican and former president Donald Trump is projected to beat Democrat Kamala Harris to become the 47th president of the United States, according to the Associated Press. This will be Trump’s second time serving as president, as he served from 2016-20. Trump lost to President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, marking the 10th time in history an active president did not win an initial re-election.

The county boards of elections will certify election results on Nov. 15. During this period, they verify provisional ballots and count absentee ballots, which could sway results in an election. Countywide tabulated results are unofficial until they are certified. With information from all county boards of elections, the NCSBE will certify election results on Nov. 26.
