Hundreds of people took advantage of the beautiful weather Saturday to enjoy opening day at the Bentonville Farmers Market. With ongoing construction on the downtown square, organizers made a few changes to the market’s layout. “We’ve had quite the turnout,” said Dylan Taylor, farmers market manager. The season kicked off with vendors, music, pets and sunny skies. Taylor said the turnout was strong, despite part of the square being closed.

Measles is back in the spotlight in Arkansas after two unvaccinated children tested positive for the virus. The Arkansas Department of Health said both children were exposed during out-of-state travel and later visited medical facilities while contagious. The most recent case was reported in Faulkner County. According to the department, the child visited two separate medical facilities earlier this week while infectious, raising concerns about possible community spread.

After days of heavy rain, floodwaters are still rising — and emergency crews in Northwest Arkansas remain on high alert. “We’ve got crews that are out driving all 950 miles of Washington County roads just watching for our problem spots,” said Tad Sours, Washington County communications director. Several rural roads have already been closed. Sours said if you see barricades, there’s a reason they’re there. “If you see tape across a road, that means it is not safe to pass,” said Sours.

A bill designed to toughen penalties in Arkansas for undocumented immigrants convicted of violent crimes cleared the state Senate on Tuesday. Supporters said Senate Bill 426 will protect communities, while opponents warn of legal complications. The "Defense Against Criminal Illegals Act," sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Bart Hester, R-Cave Springs, would add years to the sentences of undocumented individuals convicted of offenses such as murder, arson and rape.
