A life-long Arkansas resident, he has been involved in covering high school athletics in some capacity since 1985 overall and since 1987 on a full-time status. He moved to Northwest Arkansas in 2006 as a sports page designer and returned to sports writing in 2010, which he continues to do today.

The Gravette graduate was named West Fork's new head football coach during a special school board meeting Tuesday night. McKinzie replaces Rodney Selph, who earlier announced his retirement from coaching. The 40-year-old McKinzie drove to West Fork from Missouri to meet with staff members and his new team Wednesday.
