TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Dozens of protesters lined the sidewalk outside the Florida Capitol Sunday to call for gun reform in the wake of a fatal campus shooting. The protesters were calling for action after a shooter opened fire Thursday on passerby at Florida State University, killing two and injuring six others. Students from FSU and nearby Florida A&M University turned out to the rally, as well as members of Students for a Democratic Society and the Tallahassee Community Action Committee.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Tallahassee State College hosted its new student convocation Friday with thousands of students filling the campus, eager for the new school year. During the orientation for new students, there were booths set up to provide resources, class information, food, and games. (WCTV) - Florida A&M University’s Interim President Dr. Timothy Beard spoke publicly for the first time Wednesday, a day after asking the university’s senior leadership team to resign effective that day. In a letter to the senior leadership team dated Aug. 12, Dr. Beard asked the team of 19 people to resign from their positions effective on Tuesday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - During their annual retreat Thursday, the FAMU Board of Trustees tackled the controversial $237 million donation attempt earlier this year. Their discussion Thursday of the donation comes after a report, released on Monday, found the donation fraudulent. The report also found that trust in leadership, pressure to seal the deal, and a lack of thorough inspection, led to the acceptance of the donation.

FAMU Board of Trustees held a virtual meeting Wednesday discussing the search for a new president while planning for the transition period. One month ago, former FAMU president Dr. Larry Robinson announced his resignation after seven years in the role, and now the search for a new president has begun.

STEINHATCHEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Hurricane Debby touched down on Florida’s west coast early Monday. The Category 1 storm landed in the coastal town of Steinhatchee. Powerful winds reaching 80 mph blasted across the beachy town, and the storm dumped inches of rain onto beaches and sandy roads. Less than an hour after Debby landed, a trail of floodwaters followed behind. By 9 a.m., sleepy streets were swallowed as water reached up to pedestrians’ ankles. STEINHATCHEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Residents along the coast of Taylor County were racing to secure their homes and their businesses Sunday before Tropical Debby’s expected landfall. Sunday afternoon, a mandatory evacuation was ordered for Taylor County residents living in low-lying and coastal areas. One business owner has been out since 6 a.m. Sunday prepping for the storm and said it took dozens of neighbors, friends and employees to get the store items off the first floor and up to the second.

WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - As the storm’s path is continuing to be monitored, emergency management in several counties, including Wakulla, are already prepping residents just in case the local areas see impacts. The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office gave away hundreds of sandbags Friday to residents. The sheriff’s office opened a sandbag location from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, with a limit of 10 per vehicle.
