This year’s team of Tour de Rock riders received their training jerseys at a ceremony on Friday morning. Nearly 20 riders, including CHEK’s own Mackenzie Read, will be riding the length of Vancouver Island in September to raise money for cancer research with the Canadian Cancer Society.

Drivers should be on the lookout for two parades that will result in road closures in downtown Victoria on Saturday morning. The Buccaneer Days Parade and the Victoria Tartan Parade are both taking place on Saturday, May 10. The Buccaneer Days Parade, a mainstay of the annual nautical-themed fair, will kick off at approximately 10 a.m. on Dominion Road, before continuing along Esquimalt Road and ending at Admirals Road about two hours later.

The District of Saanich will soon begin asking residents if they approve of borrowing up to $150 million to build a new operations centre for the municipality. At a special council meeting Monday, council approved of launching an alternative approval process (AAP) at the end of the month asking residents for their permission to take out the hefty loan. Through an AAP, a proposal moves forward unless at least 10 per cent of electors oppose it.

Two restaurants on Vancouver Island have been named among the top 50 in Canada for 2025, according to this year’s list by magazine Canada’s 100 Best. Pluvio, in Ucluelet, and Marilena Cafe & Raw Bar, in Victoria, both made the cut in the 36th and 39th place, respectively. Tucked away at 1714 Peninsula Rd. in Ucluelet, Pluvio highlights local flavours and ingredients in all of its dishes.

The Vancouver Island Ferry Company (VIFC), which operates the Hullo ferry line between Nanaimo and Vancouver, is on the hunt for a new CEO after the current executive stepped down. On Thursday, VIFC announced current CEO Alastair Caddick was stepping down “effective immediately,” and being replaced by interim CEO Ryan Dermody, who previously served as a non-executive director on the company’s board.

A hold and secure order was issued for Selkirk Montessori, an elementary school in downtown Victoria, on Thursday afternoon. In an email sent to families of the students around 4 p.m., the school said it was issuing the hold and secure out of an abundance of caution because of a suspicious package found at a nearby restaurant, Glo. Any students still at the school for clubs or extended day care are being kept inside the building, with the exterior doors locked.

A Saanich homeowner says he’s lucky his family is uninjured after a massive tree came tumbling onto their roof on Wednesday night. Duke Shala says the tree fell onto his house near the corner of Admirals Road and Rockwell Avenue around 6 p.m., damaging the roof and sending a branch piercing through his son’s bedroom ceiling. He says he was working on an outdoor drainage project on the opposite site of the property, when suddenly he saw plants and branches fly over the top of the house.

Fire crews have been called to a house fire along Nanaimo’s waterfront Thursday afternoon. According to the Nanaimo Fire Rescue website, crews were called to the 0 block of Newcastle Avenue around noon for a report of a structure fire. Video of the fire shows firefighters hosing down flames that are shooting through the home’s roof. Fire crews could also be seen using a chainsaw to access an upper area of the house.

RCMP in the North Island says they are continuing to search for missing man Austin Lloyd, who was last seen nearly one month ago. Lloyd was last seen on April 14, and was reported missing to the Port Hardy RCMP on April 24. In an update Thursday, Mounties said that the search for Lloyd is ongoing, and asked drivers to be cautious along Highway 19 between Port Hardy and Port McNeill on Saturday, May 10, when Campbell River Search and Rescue will be helping with a search in the Port Hardy area.

The West Shore RCMP is asking the public for help locating a woman who is wanted on eight unendorsed warrants stemming from five police departments across the South Island. Police are searching for 42-year-old Sandra Humphreys for crimes that allegedly occurred in the West Shore, Victoria, Saanich, Central Saanich and Sidney.
