Almost a year after arriving in Sooke, a single mother from Ukraine and her two children face a future filled with uncertainty. Sofia Slobodeniuk and her young son and daughter left Ukraine in March 2023 to seek refuge in Canada during the most challenging time of the war. After an arduous journey with little more than the clothes on their backs, followed by a stay in Slovakia to arrange for their paperwork, the family arrived in Sooke in August.

It was a sticky situation, to say the least. A hiker on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail became stuck in mud up to his hips recently and couldn’t get out for a couple of hours. Although Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue were in the process of preparing to respond to the incident on March 29, the male hiker was pulled out of the mud by other hikers passing by on the trail, said Victoria Clarke, team manager and co-ordinator for JDF Search and Rescue.

A petition protesting the closure of a critical area of the salmon fishery in Port Renfrew to recreational fishing is casting a wide net. More than 600 people have signed the petition in response to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ impending decision to close Area 20 in an effort the DFO says aims to protect salmon stocks and southern resident killer whales. Charles Borg, a spokesperson for the group behind the petition, said people are “very passionate” about the issue.
