Fire destroys Popkum gas station, near Chilliwack

A large fire has destroyed Shell gas station at Bridal Falls Road in Popkum, near Chilliwack, on Saturday. Popkum firefighters were paged at about noon to respond to a motor home on fire. Chilliwack and Agassiz firefighters are on the scene as is the RCMP. BC Hydro and Fortis BC have also been paved. The motor home was fully involved and fire has spread to the station. Smoke can easily be seen from Agassiz. The adjacent Ranchers restaurant sustained damage. More to come.

8 Seabird Island students to graduate with UFV Halq'emeylem certificates

It's set to be a proud day for the Seabird Island (Sq'éwqel) First Nation. Come June 11, eight students from Seabird Island will graduate from The University of the Fraser Valley's (UFV) Upriver Halq'emeylem Intermediate Proficiency Certificate program – the first of its kind in the country. Seabird Island Halq'emeylem instructor said the local students are frontline workers and community members who participated in the program to better integrate the language into their respective workplaces.

Conditions dry going into June for Agassiz-Harrison

The spring's transition into summer has been particularly dry in Agassiz-Harrison. According to data from Weather Canada, May's rainfall is about half of the average rainfall based on about the 30 most recent, available years of climate norm data between 1981 and 2010. The 29-year average is about 103 millimetres of rain for May; this May, 56.7 millimetres of rain fell.
District of Kent gets active in Participaction

Couch potatoes, rise from your perches. Gym fans, step it up. For the first time since 2020, the District of Kent is participating in Participaction this June. Dubbing the program "Step-Up Kent," the Community Recreation and Cultural Centre is kicking off the month with seniors' week June 1 to 7. Anyone aged 60 or older gets free access to the weight room, gym and open swims at the Ferny Coombe Pool.
Sq'éwqel community approves 75-year lease for concrete factory

The Sq'éwqel First Nation has voted overwhelmingly to extend establishing a long-time ease to a major local manufacturer. Referendum day was Monday, June 2, for the Seabird Island community. With a 118-33 vote, AE Concrete's 25-year lease has been extended to 75 years. The extension allows AE to plan for long-term investments and growth. Monday's votes tally to a 78-per cent approval rate. AE Concrete currently leases out 16 acres of the 50-acre Sq'éwqel Business Park.
Harrison Hot Springs begins water restrictions

Village officials recently announced that, effective June 1, residents will face water restrictions until further notice or until the traditional end date of Sept. 30. Conserving water is particularly helpful in the event of a wildfire and ensuring everyone's household needs are met.
2025 AESS Grad Parade set for June 6

This year’s Agassiz Elementary Secondary School grad parade takes place on Friday, June 6, at approximately 6:20 p.m. The grads will travel through Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, Seabird Island and throughout the District of Kent.
