A bill that would attempt to avoid a repeat of the record logjam of bills filed this session has encountered forceful opposition from some Republicans, who say it will give Democrats, as the party in power, the upper hand and further squelch minority voices. The first public hearing into House Bill 2006, which would limit each member of the Oregon Legislature to 25 bills apiece, was peppered with jovial jabs at members of either party before the House Rules Committee Thursday.

Choked with emotion, the Oregon House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill Thursday that members said would empower future victims of sexual assault to seek justice by eliminating deadlines to file lawsuits against alleged abusers or the institutions that employed them. The bill would apply no matter how many decades have passed since the alleged abuse happened and whether the victim was an adult or a child.

The standoff has generated name-calling among the citizenry and even a threat to exterminate the mayor.

At The People’s Depot, a makeshift can-and-bottle redemption site tucked under the Morrison Bridge, doing business is all about efficiency and kindness. Efficiency for the typically 150 people who show up each weekday on foot, bicycles pulling trailers or skateboards or in dilapidated cars with beverage containers they’ve spent hours collecting from recycling and trash bins.
