Enough is enough, says a bipartisan group of Oregon legislators about the torrent of bills filed this session. They introduced a proposal Wednesday that would limit each lawmaker to no more than 25 per session. House Bill 2006 is the Legislature’s attempt to rein in the record number of bills filed this session — more than 3,500, which is at least a 25-year high.

If you are among the small minority of taxpayers who’ve waited until April 15 to mail your tax returns — rather than e-file them — don’t wait until Tuesday night to execute your eleventh-hour plan. Long gone are the days when a few post offices in some of Oregon’s most populous areas — including Portland — would collect and postmark federal and state tax returns as late as 11:59 p.m. on Tax Day.

An Oregon coast sheriff took the highly unusual step Thursday of arresting the mayor of Waldport for taking her seat at the council table after all six other members of the council had voted to expel her from office. In doing so, Lincoln County Sheriff Adam Shanks figuratively set the 2,200-resident city afire, sparking an onslaught of scathing phone calls, texts, emails and social media posts accusing the sheriff, the city manager and the city council of undermining democracy.

A bill that would have granted judges the discretion to lower the seriousness of some misdemeanor offenses — so they would no longer be crimes but instead “violations” punishable by fines — died in committee this week. House Bill 2469 faced powerful opposition from prosecutors, who said it would have decriminalized a long list of crimes by allowing judges on a case-by-case basis to treat them as mere violations, similar to speeding tickets.
