    Reed College is promising free tuition nationwide to any student whose family earns less than $100,000 a year. Reed announced in December that students in Oregon and Washington whose family income falls under that cap wouldn’t have to pay the hefty tuition at the private Portland liberal arts college. Tuition alone is estimated at $71,460 for next school year, and the total cost including room and board is about $90,000.

That’s up from two in the same time period last year and five in 2023. None of the children who died in 2025 were in foster care. But half were the subjects of an active child abuse investigation when they died and the other half lived in families that child welfare agency had been called to check on in the previous 12 months.

    Sean Horan and three of his partners are going on a trip to Mexico this month. They want to see Mayan and Aztec sites and will spend almost two weeks exploring the country’s cultural heritage, from Mexico City to Cancún. Horan has been excited to see the country’s archeological sites for years, he said, and is thrilled the trip is finally happening. It’s returning to the United States that he’s a bit worried about.
