FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - Mindy O’Neall, who has served on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly since 2019, has announced her intention to run for Mayor of the City of Fairbanks in the October local elections. Filing her Letter of Intent to run for the position on Tuesday, June 17, O’Neall joins current City Mayor David Pruhs, who filed his own letter to run for reelection on December 11, 2024. Each candidate must also file as a candidate for office with the city clerk’s office in July.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - The Polaris Building in downtown Fairbanks, once the tallest building in the city, is on its way to the ground. Multiple floors have been removed toward its demolition, which is expected to be completed by the end of this summer construction season. Opened in 1952, the structure, originally 11 floors and more than 100 feet tall, was eventually abandoned. It was declared a health hazard in 2012.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - Joy Community Center (JCC) is set to close on July 1 after Thursday’s meeting of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly. The assembly voted 5-4 against an ordinance which would have provided funding for the center to remain open while the borough made plans to divest itself from the facility. The ordinance, sponsored by Assembly Member Kristan Kelly, would have funded JCC’s continued operations through the end of 2025.

Mike Dunleavy’s line-item vetoes, including a $200 per student cut to education funding, in a move district leaders say means a sudden $2.5 million deficit. “I’m just really frustrated with the lack of support for education funding,” Fairbanks School Board President Melissa Burnett said.
