Fairbanks police detectives are requesting a warrant for a second man charged in connection with a May 17 shooting incident in South Fairbanks. Thomas Jay Dementieff, 18, faces charges of felony second-degree weapons misconduct, felony third-degree assault, misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal mischief, misdemeanor reckless endangerment and misdemeanor fifth-degree weapons misconduct for allegedly firing shots at a 17th Avenue building.

A Fairbanks man pleaded guilty last week to producing counterfeit currency and using methamphetamine in November 2022. Art Shane Ford, 35, pleaded guilty May 20 to felony first-degree forgery and felony third-degree drugs misconduct for a six year flat sentence. The state dismissed charges of felony tampering with physical evidence and felony fourth-degree drugs misconduct.

The Science Olympiad team at Discover Peak Charter School returned from competing at the national Science Olympiad tournament in Nebraska this weekend. There were no after school programs when Maynard Maglaya started as a K-8 teacher at Discovery Peak, so he started them. Maglaya first started Battle of the Books, a statewide reading motivation and comprehension program, in 2021 and kicked off Science Olympiad in 2022.
