When students and teachers filled the Hutchison High School gym at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, they were expecting an end of year pep talk before finals. Instead, welding instructor Pete Daley was honored as the 2026 Alaska Teacher of the Year. Department of Education and Early Development Commissioner Deena Bishop was costumed in a black welding mask to surprise Daley at the school Tuesday.

Updated: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13Two men are dead after a domestic disturbance led to a fatal shooting in the 1600 block of Washington Drive Monday night. Fairbanks police responded to the domestic disturbance at 10:23 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from Fairbanks Police Department and Alaska State Troopers. Thomas Bean, 36, started shooting at Fairbanks police officers with a semi-automatic rifle, hitting multiple officers’ cars.

Fairbanks police are investigating a Monday night shooting on Washington Drive. Residents reported hearing around 30 gunshots on Washington Drive at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday. Fairbanks police posted on social media around midnight that local law enforcement officers were involved in a shooting. All officers are safe, according to the release. A man was sentenced to 75 years Monday afternoon in Fairbanks for killing his wife and dumping her body off the Dalton Highway. Superior Court Judge Patricia Haines sentenced 62-year-old Robert Daniel Bridges to 75 years suspended for the first-degree murder of his wife, Kimberly Bridges, in October 2021, and two years flat for tampering with physical evidence. “The evidence at trial showed that Kimberly Bridges was shot in the head when she was lying in her bed.

Man sentenced for possessing, distributing child porn

A Fairbanks man was sentenced to five years in federal prison Friday morning for possessing and distributing child pornography. Joshua James Foti, 37, pleaded guilty in January to distributing child pornography. Foti, known online as “flemb33,” possessed and distributed child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on Jan. 18, 2021. According to First Assistant Federal Defender Gary Colbath, Foti traded 42 images and two videos using a dark web social media application.

Dawlton Cleveland was making a snack for his kids in his North Pole kitchen Tuesday afternoon when his youngest daughter told him there was a fire outside. “Dad, there’s something big on fire,” she said. Cleveland and his wife, Elizabeth, saw that a side-by-side was engulfed in flames in front of their next door neighbors’ home at the corner of Benjamin Franklin Court and Liberty Court.
