The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued an air quality advisory Tuesday afternoon for much of Central and Eastern Alaska as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to drift across the border. The advisory, which is in effect through 2 p.m. Wednesday, warns that smoke levels will fluctuate across the region — ranging from “Good” to “Unhealthy,” depending on location and elevation.

Two hundred and fifty years of military prowess garnered the spotlight Thursday in Fairbanks at the 11th Airborne Division’s Army Birthday Ball. Saturday officially marked the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, making it the oldest of the six U.S. military branches. The Thursday-night ball in Fairbanks at 8 Star Event Center was the local celebration of the nationwide birthday event, which included a military-style parade in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.

University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Dan White announced Friday that he will retire on July 26, capping a 30-year career with UAF and the University of Alaska system. White has served as chancellor since 2017 and led the university through a period of fiscal challenges, system-wide restructuring, and, more recently, renewed growth in enrollment and research.
