If you were asked to name the first thought that comes to mind when I say the words “concept album,” what would you say? For most, it would be fair to assume that nothing compares to the prog rock English band Pink Floyd and their monumental achievement that is The Wall. After The Wall‘s release at the tail end of 1979, the band began touring the album shortly after. The first show was performed on February 7, 1980.

Quintessential to ‘80s pop culture and music, INXS changed the landscape of alternative music. Their sound is unrivaled and unique, never fitting into a single category. Their earlier work is filled with synth and similar to many pop artists’, yet there’s plenty filled with rock and new wave sounds all blended together to make INXS what they are known for today.

December 11, 2023 On Dec. 11, 1964, famous musician Sam Cooke was found dead in his Los Angeles motel room. Immediately, when talking about this case, it is important to mention the mysterious circumstances surrounding Cooke’s death. When police arrived at Hacienda Motel, they discovered that Cooke had died from a gunshot wound. They questioned the manager of the motel, Bertha Franklin, and she admitted to shooting Cooke in self-defense, but the story she told doesn’t quite add up.

With December and the winter finally here it’s easy to fall victim to the gloomy days and let it consume us. For that reason, I would like to shine the spotlight on a fun and lighthearted song by one of the most influential British rock bands, The Police. The band is nothing short of legendary, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 along with winning a multitude of awards for their contributions to music.

November 18, 2023 I can’t say I have ever been a huge fan of Brockhampton or Kevin Abstract in the past. But Blanket has been one of the most pleasant surprises for me when it comes to albums released in 2023. I find the more I listen to this album the more I love it. Blanket seamlessly fuses so many genres together while being incredibly vibrant and calming.

November 13, 2023 On Nov. 14, 1998, Lauryn Hill became the first female rapper to land a No. 1 hit on The Billboard Hot 100 Chart. “Doo Wop (That Thing),” the lead single off Hill’s debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, would spend two weeks atop the charts. The song earned Hill recognition at the 1999 Grammy Awards, where she won five awards, including Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Album of the Year.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, I believe it is important to highlight the achievements of Native Americans in music. Testament is a band that has over the years become one of the most influential thrash metal bands of all time. Unknown to many though, their lead singer, Chuck Billy, is Native American himself. Billy was born in California to a Native American father and a Mexican mother and has easily been one of the most underappreciated voices in metal.

November 6, 2023 I would have to argue that everyone knows at least one Led Zeppelin song — at least one. And chances are that song came from Led Zeppelin IV. Led Zeppelin released Led Zeppelin IV on Nov. 8, 1971, as their fourth studio installment. It was also their fourth self-titled release.

October 30, 2023 Detroit has been home to many rock icons. It’s the first place that loved the band Kiss, and legends like Alice Cooper came from it. Rock is rooted in the city’s history. Iggy Pop, a legend of the genre, also originated from the Motor City. The Stooges made Iggy Pop famous, but their beginning started at a Halloween party played in Michigan on Oct. 31, 1967. The group originally was dubbed “Psychedelic Stooges,” which is unknown to many.

Odd bands exploded in popularity in the ‘90s. Groups such as Primus and White Zombie are just a few of the many that would go on to become legendary, despite not being the easiest for most listeners to stomach. A band that stuck out in such a crowded alternative scene was Type O Negative. The alternative metal band had a distinct style that made them look like gothic vampires. Thematically, their music matched their unique style with songs about blood, death and darkness.
