A new report is raising the issue of the amount of substances found in Grafton Lake. Testing was performed on the mid-island lake by the Raincoast Conservancy Foundation’s Healthy Waters program last October. The organization partners with local communities and governments to monitor watersheds around the province, including Victoria, Powell River and Whistler.

Bowen RCMP are hoping to curb a concerning motorist trend which has recently developed on island roads. Over the past two months eight impaired driving charges have been laid leading to either licence suspensions or criminal charges. Adding to the alarm is the fact that five of these resulted in crashes, many of them severe and some causing injury to the occupants of the vehicle.

The Bowen Island Farmers Market is set to enter its fourth weekend of the season, with a renewed focus on the importance of local, sustainable food production. The gathering takes place each Saturday morning at Bowen Island Community School (BICS) from 10 am to 12:30 pm. The curtains are set to raise on the Bowen Island Community Centre’s first ever theatrical performance. Dancing at Lughnasa will have the honour of being the first play to grace the new stage at the Bowen Theatre. There have already been several successful music shows at the venue during its opening month, and now it’s time to set the scene for script work. The script in question was written by Irish writer Brian Friel in 1990.

The Here’s Bowen Arts Tour is returning for a second year, with even more artists, performances and hub stations to explore. The tour is taking place this Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25, at 23 different locations across Bowen. There’s 135 artists participating with works that span the visual, musical and literary arts. The tour runs from 11 am to 4 pm each day, with numerous special demonstrations and performances taking place throughout the weekend.

The foundational piece of the island’s planning vision is getting a refresh. A review of Bowen’s Official Community Plan (OCP) begins this week. The document serves as the building blocks for all planning decisions on the island, from environmental preservation to rezonings, density and commercial placements, and much more. Council discussion on local projects frequently reference one or more OCP points as rationale for or against a decision.
Bowen and Gibsons mayors seek action on local ferry routes

Mayors of two coastal communities are hoping a letter to BC Ferries will spark some positive change regarding local ferry service. Bowen Island mayor Andrew Leonard and Gibsons mayor Silas White from the Sunshine Coast sent the letter to B.C. premier David Eby last Friday. In it they outline both historical and recent challenges with the routes to Bowen Island and Langdale which originate at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal.
