MT. MORRIS – The Mt. Morris Village Board on Tuesday selected a company to demolish the second downtown building destroyed in a fire six months ago. On Nov. 12, board members unanimously voted to accept a $12,845.50 bid from R.E. Wolber & Sons Excavating of Mt. Morris to demolish and clean up 1 N. Wesley Ave. “To me, it’s a no-brainer, Wolber being half the price of everyone else,” Public Property and Ordinance Trustee Mike Fay said. Village Board members considered two other bids for the project.

Nov. 11—DIXON — Dozens of people gathered Monday at Veterans Memorial Park in Dixon for a Veterans Day ceremony. The 11 a.m. event was hosted by the Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 540 in conjunction with the Veterans Memorial Park Commission. VFW 540 Service Officer and Past Commander Tom Bushman served as the master of ceremonies. Bushman was a staff sergeant in the Army, and also is the Lee County Honor Flight chairperson. Polo American Legion gives U.S. flags ‘one last mission’

POLO – Unserviceable U.S. flags are getting a second chance to perform one final duty, thanks to the Farewell Flags initiative started at Patrick Fegan American Legion Post No. 83 earlier in 2024. Farewell Flags provides flags to be draped over the coffins of veterans being cremated. Those flags go to local funeral homes, Legion Post No. 83 Past Commander Cynthia Reynolds said.

POLO — City of Polo and Buffalo Township officials celebrated the opening of a new joint municipal building Monday evening. Members of the public joined officials and staff for a 6 p.m. ribbon-cutting inside the new building, and took the chance to explore the space. Both municipalities contributed to the cost of the $1.93 million building at 118 N. Franklin Ave., Polo, about 2 blocks north of the old city and township halls.
Voter turnout in the Sauk Valley down from 2020 election

Nov. 6—DIXON — Voter turnout in the Sauk Valley area was down slightly from the 2020 election, but still up from 2016. In Carroll County, 7,904 ballots were cast, bringing voter turnout to 76%. Voter turnout was 77.67% in 2020 and 68.73% in the 2016 election. Lee County counted 16,197 ballots and voter turnout was 73.5%, compared to 74.23% in 2020 and 68.53% in 2016. A total of 25,933 ballots were cast in Ogle County for a 76.6% voter turnout.
Brooks Jewelers opens for business in downtown Oregon

OREGON — For the first time in decades, Oregon has a jewelry store. Brooks Jewelers opened in early September at 113 N. Fourth St., Oregon. Along with selling jewelry, the store offers jewelry repairs, cleanings and inspections, appraisals, engravings and custom jewelry. “You can’t account for everyone’s taste, so I kind of lined my showcases with staples,” owner Jen Brooks said. “I tell people, ‘If you don’t see what you like, we can either order it for you or make it for you. It’s not a problem.
