A woman who has been tending what she calls a “sacred fire” in Stanley Park is pushing back against a local First Nations leader who has questioned her claim to the area. Brenda Silvey calls herself a matriarch of the land, and her supporters say they’ve been holding ceremony with support from hereditary leaders. She has kept the fire alight near the park’s totem poles for more than a month to protest the Vancouver Park Board’s operation to remove dead and dying looper moth-affected trees.

He’s a little dog that has received a huge amount of love. “He had surgery last night around 3:00 on his front left leg and his rear left leg,” Oscar’s guardian Laurie Schildt said. “So they’ve put a plate in the front on his left leg because it was broken under the ulna bone so his, right below the elbow was broken so they put a plate in there.”She also said he had a hip displacement on the same side that needed fixing.
