ST. CLAIR SHORES — With the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade now just days away, committee members and guests are gearing up to participate and have a float load of fun. Dave Ellis, St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade chair, said that while it has been hectic, the parade planning is going as scheduled. “It’s a hectic period, doing this without rehearsals, but, yeah, I think we’re on track,” Ellis said.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — In a 4-2 vote at its April 15 meeting, the St. Clair Shores City Council approved to accept, if awarded, a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant. Councilman John Caron and Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Candice Rusie voted no. Mayor Kip Walby was excused and Rusie conducted the meeting.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Joe Wielgot, a St. Clair Shores resident, plays Santa Claus numerous times during the Christmas season, and he said he doesn’t do it for money. Playing Santa is one of the many things Wielgot does. He is a member of the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores, where they make food baskets for those in need, give bikes to less fortunate children and raise money for scholarships for those who need them. He is also a member of the St. Clair Shores Housing Commission.

METRO DETROIT — Bird-watching takes patience and precision, but it pays off in the end for those looking to learn more about the magnificent creatures that fly and capture the perfect shot. Rosann Kovalcik, a bird-watcher and birding expert from Grosse Pointe Woods, said a high school biology teacher at Lake Shore High School started a bird-watching club. A member of that club lived down the street from her and they enjoyed the hobby together.

CLAIR SHORES — St. Clair Shores city officials and staff celebrated Arbor Day on April 26 by planting trees in the Brys Park Arboretum. According to the St. Clair Shores website, the arboretum was established in the 1990s, and in 2022, the city approved an agreement with ReLeaf Michigan to reestablish it.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee will host the 29th Annual Nautical Coast Cleanup starting at 8 a.m. on May 19 at the Jefferson Yacht Club. Michael Droogleever, the Nautical Coast Cleanup event director and a member of the SCSWEC, said preparation is going well. “It’s always exciting every year to see the new interest and the new talent that we can bring in,” Droogleever said. This year, the committee has been focusing on communication and outreach.
